Back pain • Neck stiffness • Joint and muscle pain • Car accident rehabilitation
Is back or neck pain making work, driving or everyday movement difficult? At Prana Physiotherapy Surrey, chiropractic care starts with an assessment and a conversation about what you want to get back to doing.
Your chiropractor explains the findings, discusses suitable treatment options and builds a plan around your symptoms and goals. Care may include hands-on treatment, exercise and practical advice for daily activity.

Does This Describe Your Pain?
- Lower back pain when sitting, bending or getting up
- Neck stiffness that makes turning your head uncomfortable
- Tension across your shoulders or upper back
- Recurring aches after desk work, driving or physical work
- Back pain travelling toward the buttock or leg
- Muscle or joint discomfort after sport or a car accident
- Pain limiting sleep, exercise or daily tasks
Similar symptoms can have different causes. Assessment helps determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate or whether you need another health professional or medical investigation.
What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
Tell us where you hurt, when symptoms began and how they affect your life. Your chiropractor reviews relevant medical history, medications, injuries, previous treatment and your goals.
The examination may include movement, joint and muscle function, strength and appropriate neurological tests when symptoms suggest nerve involvement. Findings guide the discussion about treatment and whether further investigation is needed.
Before treatment, your chiropractor explains the proposed approach, benefits, risks and alternatives and asks for your consent. You can ask questions or decline a technique. Treatment may begin at the first visit when appropriate, with advice or home exercises to support your plan.
What to bring: Comfortable clothing, a medication list, relevant imaging reports if available and your insurance information. For ICBC, bring your claim number, collision date and Personal Health Number. Call to confirm appointment length and fees.
Common Problems We Assess
Back Pain and Stiffness
A sore back may affect sitting, bending, lifting and walking. Assessment considers your symptoms and physical function. Treatment may combine appropriate manual care with exercises and activity guidance. The aim is better comfort and function, rather than a promise of a permanent cure.
Neck and Upper Back Pain
Neck stiffness and shoulder tension may interfere with shoulder-checking, sleep and work. We assess movement and contributing demands, then discuss care suited to your presentation. Neck manipulation is not required for every patient.
Sciatica and Leg Symptoms
Pain extending from the back toward the leg can have several causes, including nerve irritation. Your chiropractor assesses the symptom pattern and recommends suitable care or medical review. New weakness or concerning bladder and bowel changes need urgent attention.
Headaches With Neck Symptoms
Some headaches may be associated with neck dysfunction, but headaches have many causes. Assessment is important before deciding whether neck treatment is suitable. New, severe or changing headaches may need medical evaluation; chiropractic care should not be presented as a cure for migraine or all headaches.
Joint, Muscle and Sports-Related Pain
Musculoskeletal pain may affect your shoulders, hips or other joints as well as your spine. Your assessment helps identify what is limiting movement and whether chiropractic care, exercise rehabilitation or another service is appropriate.
Your Chiropractic Recovery Pathway
Step 1
Relieve
Understand the problem and begin appropriate symptom management. Discuss hands-on options, adjust aggravating tasks and start activity at a manageable level.
Step 2
Restore
Work on mobility, strength and movement confidence. Your plan may include home exercises and practical changes to work or daily activity.
Step 3
Recover
Progress toward the demands that matter to you, such as lifting, walking, computer work or sport. Review your response and decide whether to continue, adjust or conclude treatment.
These stages may overlap. Progress is assessed against your goals; there is no fixed number of visits that suits everyone.
What Can Chiropractic Treatment Include?
Joint Mobilization and Adjustments
Mobilization uses controlled joint movement. An adjustment or manipulation applies a controlled force to a joint when clinically appropriate. Your chiropractor discusses whether either option is suitable for you. You can request alternatives to manipulation.
Soft Tissue Treatment
Hands-on techniques may be used for muscle-related discomfort or movement restrictions. Technique selection depends on the assessment and is discussed with you before treatment.
Exercise and Self-Management
Your plan may include mobility, strengthening and gradual return to activity. Education can help you manage symptoms between appointments and build tolerance for everyday demands.
Coordinated Rehabilitation at Prana
Our Surrey clinic also offers physiotherapy, registered massage therapy, acupuncture and active rehabilitation. When useful, your chiropractor may recommend another service. With your consent, clinicians can coordinate goals; multiple services are not automatically required.
ICBC Chiropractic Care in Surrey
After a car accident, eligible ICBC claims include up to 25 pre-approved chiropractic treatments in the first 12 weeks after the collision, without a doctor's referral. Bring your claim number, collision date and Personal Health Number.
Call Prana Surrey to check eligibility, direct billing and any approvals needed beyond the initial period. Your care plan follows your clinical needs and recovery goals; the coverage allowance is not a requirement to attend every available session.
Chiropractic Care FAQs
Do I need a doctor's referral?
You can generally contact a chiropractor directly. Check whether your extended health plan requires a referral for reimbursement. Injury claims may have separate requirements.
Do I need an X-ray first?
Not routinely for every patient. Imaging is considered when examination findings or health history indicate it could change care. Bring reports you already have; you do not need a scan simply to request an appointment.
Does every visit involve cracking my back or neck?
No. Treatment is selected for your findings and preferences. Mobilization, soft-tissue care, exercise and education may be options. Ask about alternatives if you prefer to avoid manipulation.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Suitability depends on the technique and your health. Temporary soreness or increased discomfort can occur. Serious complications are rare, but neck manipulation has been associated with artery injury and stroke. Your chiropractor should discuss risks, alternatives and any reasons to avoid a technique before you consent.
Can chiropractic care help back pain?
Some people with certain types of back pain may benefit from manual care as part of a broader plan. Results vary. Assessment determines whether it is appropriate, and exercise and self-management may also be recommended.
Will I need treatment forever?
Not automatically. Your plan should have goals and be reviewed against your response. Discuss visit frequency, expected milestones and when you can manage independently. Ongoing care should be a considered choice, not a universal requirement.
Should I choose chiropractic or physiotherapy?
Both can address musculoskeletal problems, and their methods may overlap. The best starting point depends on your symptoms, preferences and goals. Call us to discuss which assessment is suitable; you may not need both services.
Is chiropractic covered by extended health insurance?
Many plans include chiropractic benefits, but deductibles, annual limits and eligible services vary. Direct billing is available where supported. Bring your insurance details and ask about any patient balance before treatment.
Is ICBC chiropractic care covered?
For eligible claims, up to 25 treatments are pre-approved during the first 12 weeks after the crash. Call with your claim details to confirm billing arrangements and any further authorization required.
What if my injury happened at work?
Report it to your employer and WorkSafeBC. Call with your claim number and injury date so we can confirm whether chiropractic appointments can be arranged under your claim and what approval is needed. Do not assume all services are covered.
What are the fees and appointment times?
Call 604-260-0183 for current initial and follow-up fees, appointment lengths and chiropractic availability. Ask about same-day, evening or weekend openings; the chiropractor's schedule may differ from general clinic hours.
